In 1989 I started my own company, Simar Oil, in the niche market of jet fuel trading. In the 80’s and 90’s this market was an emerging market and was a less understood speciality, proving to be an ideal environment in which to experiment and evolve techniques for trading in the oil industry. Simar Oil became a worldwide jet fuel trading company resulting in it being the sole supplier to Stockholm airport for four years. At the age of 21 I acquired a place as a junior trader for Vanol in Rotterdam and from there I was thrown into the deep end of the exciting markets of oil trading. I initially traded fuel oil during the miners strike and thereafter I started the jet fuel trading desk. In the following years I would become involved with firms such as Barclays and RWE. I then opened another company, called Simon Pratt and Partners, which supplied downstream products in Eastern Europe.

BOB HAYNES,  Director, Techniques in Oil Trading
My first six years in the oil world was with Esso. I moved quickly through the company and left to join Mabanaft, London. I was promoted into shipping, marketing and eventually began trading naphtha from their head office in Hamburg. In subsequent years I joined Neste as a trading manager and finally became Managing Director of Neste Petroleum Products Ltd. I then moved onto Managing Director of Blue Ocean Baltic, Light ends trading manager at Marc Rich and became the joint Managing Director of oil trading at Cargill. After this I had an extremely interesting 6 years at OandO where I learnt a lot about West African cargo trading and then finally came back into naphtha trading for Arcadia in Nyon, Switzerland.
